Bowonsaji Temple Season

  Bowonsaji  is a historic temple site located in Yonghyeon-ri, Seosan, South Korea. While the wooden structures no longer stand, the site remains one of the most significant archaeological and religious landmarks in the region, reflecting the artistic transitions from the Baekje Kingdom through the Goryeo Dynasty. Major Cultural Landmarks Five-Story Stone Pagoda (National Treasure)  Recently elevated to National Treasure status, this pagoda is the centerpiece of the site.   Deep in the cliffs of Gaya Mountain in Seosan, South Korea, lies one of the most heartwarming treasures of ancient Korean art: the  Seosan Maae Samjon Bulsang  (Rock-carved Trinity Buddha of Seosan). Commonly referred to as  "The Smile of Baekje,"  this National Treasure (No. 84) is a testament to the sophisticated artistry and gentle spirit of the Baekje Kingdom (18 BCE – 660 CE). Why is it Called "The Smile of Baekje"? Unlike many Buddhist statues that carry a stern or overly solemn expression, the three figures carved into this granite cliff radiate a warm, human-like joy. The Main Buddha:  The central figure, Shakyamuni, features a distinctive, generous grin and round, friendly cheeks. The Changing Smile:  One of the most magical aspects of this site is how the expression changes.
