  Deep in the cliffs of Gaya Mountain in Seosan, South Korea, lies one of the most heartwarming treasures of ancient Korean art: the  Seosan Maae Samjon Bulsang  (Rock-carved Trinity Buddha of Seosan). Commonly referred to as  "The Smile of Baekje,"  this National Treasure (No. 84) is a testament to the sophisticated artistry and gentle spirit of the Baekje Kingdom (18 BCE – 660 CE). Why is it Called "The Smile of Baekje"? Unlike many Buddhist statues that carry a stern or overly solemn expression, the three figures carved into this granite cliff radiate a warm, human-like joy. The Main Buddha:  The central figure, Shakyamuni, features a distinctive, generous grin and round, friendly cheeks. The Changing Smile:  One of the most magical aspects of this site is how the expression changes. Depending on the  angle of the sun  and the time of day, the shadows move across the rock, making the smile appear subtle at dawn and deep and hearty at noon....
