The Smile of Baekje: Discovering the Seosan Haemi Maae Samjon Bulsang

Deep in the cliffs of Gaya Mountain in Seosan, South Korea, lies one of the most heartwarming treasures of ancient Korean art: the Seosan Maae Samjon Bulsang (Rock-carved Trinity Buddha of Seosan).

Commonly referred to as "The Smile of Baekje," this National Treasure (No. 84) is a testament to the sophisticated artistry and gentle spirit of the Baekje Kingdom (18 BCE – 660 CE).

Why is it Called "The Smile of Baekje"?

Unlike many Buddhist statues that carry a stern or overly solemn expression, the three figures carved into this granite cliff radiate a warm, human-like joy.

  • The Main Buddha: The central figure, Shakyamuni, features a distinctive, generous grin and round, friendly cheeks.

  • The Changing Smile: One of the most magical aspects of this site is how the expression changes. Depending on the angle of the sun and the time of day, the shadows move across the rock, making the smile appear subtle at dawn and deep and hearty at noon.

  • Symbol of Peace: This "smile" represents the benevolent and peaceful nature that the Baekje people sought to embody.

How to Get There

The Seosan Maae Samjon Bulsang is located in a serene forest area. It requires a bit of travel from Seoul, but the peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect day trip.

By Public Transportation

  1. Seoul to Seosan: Take an Express Bus from Central City Terminal (Honam Line) to Seosan Bus Terminal(approx. 1.5 to 2 hours).

  2. Seosan Terminal to the Site: * By Bus: Take a local bus bound for Unsan (운산) and get off at the entrance to the Maae Samjon Bulsang.

    • By Taxi: A taxi from Seosan Terminal takes about 20–25 minutes and is the most convenient way to reach the trail entrance.

      By Car

      • Address: 65-13, Maaesamjonbul-gil, Unsan-myeon, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do

      • Parking: There is a parking lot at the base of the trail. From there, it is a light 10-15 minute walk up a well-maintained path and stairs to reach the carvings.
