Bowonsaji Temple Season
Bowonsaji is a historic temple site located in Yonghyeon-ri, Seosan, South Korea. While the wooden structures no longer stand, the site remains one of the most significant archaeological and religious landmarks in the region, reflecting the artistic transitions from the Baekje Kingdom through the Goryeo Dynasty.
Major Cultural Landmarks
Five-Story Stone Pagoda (National Treasure) Recently elevated to National Treasure status, this pagoda is the centerpiece of the site. It is celebrated for its elegant proportions and the detailed carvings of the "Eight Guardian Deities" on its base. It beautifully blends the styles of the Baekje and Silla periods.
Stone Flagpole Supports (Treasure) These massive stone pillars (Dangganjiju) were used to hold up temple flags during major ceremonies. Their height and sturdiness reflect the grand scale of the temple during its peak.
Stone Basin (Treasure) This is one of the largest stone water containers in Korea. Carved from a single massive rock, it was used by monks to store water for daily use.
Stupa and Stele of National Preceptor Beopin (Treasure) These monuments honor the Goryeo-era monk Tanmun. The stele, featuring a dragon-headed capstone and a tortoise-shaped base, provides valuable historical records of his life and the temple's history.
